How this list was built

The question behind this project is narrow: which Portland Timbers players have ever played in one of Europe's big five top divisions? Answering it properly means fixing four things that are usually left vague.

Inclusion rules

• Club scope. All Timbers incarnations: the NASL club of 1975–82 including its indoor seasons, the 1985–90 Portland revival, the A-League and USL First Division club of 2001–2010, and the MLS club from 2011 onward.
• League scope. Top divisions only — the English First Division and Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the 1. Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Second tiers are excluded, as are Scotland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium.
• Direction. Either way round. Most entries went Europe first, then Portland; the list is built to hold movers in the other direction too.
• Threshold. At least one senior league appearance. A contract, a bench spot or cup-only minutes at a big five club is not enough.

Source hierarchy

Appearance figures come primarily from worldfootball.net player summary pages, with Wikipedia career-statistics tables and club all-time appearance tables used where worldfootball had no usable page. One important convention: worldfootball files all English top-flight appearances, including pre-1992 First Division ones, under the label “Premier League”, and lists second-tier appearances separately as “Championship”. Roster coverage came from the NASLjerseys season rosters, the ASL-era rosters and the all-time MLS roster. Every player page lists the exact pages its numbers came from.

Portland appearance figures

The Portland apps column is a separate research pass from the big-five column, and the two use different sources. For the 1975–82 NASL side and the 1989–90 revival the figures are the outdoor regular-season games and goals published in the NASLjerseys season rosters. That source lists outdoor and indoor totals in separate tables and publishes no playoff column, so no all-competitions total is possible for any NASL-era player; the indoor games are quoted in the note on each player page instead. For the WSA, A-League and MLS eras the figures come from Wikipedia career-statistics tables, individual season pages, FBref and FotMob, and an all-competitions total is given wherever a source publishes one — 17 of the 44 players.

Verification process

For the modern eras, all Wikipedia articles in the three pre-MLS Timbers player categories — 211 in total — were cross-checked against the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 player categories. Only Kasey Keller and Michael O'Neill matched, confirming no post-1992 qualifier was missed. Because Wikipedia has no equivalent category for the pre-1992 English First Division, the 1975–82 squads were screened player by player from the season rosters instead.

Known limitations

• Appearance totals are generally career top-division totals across all listed clubs, not a single-club figure. Where a player had only one top-flight club the two are the same.
• Jimmy Kelly is the one qualifier without a numeric total. His First Division appearances for Wolves are documented but never quantified in a source that could be verified, so his count is recorded as n.a. rather than estimated.
• The main residual risk is an obscure 1970s squad member with no Wikipedia article and no worldfootball page. Corrections with a citable source are welcome.
• Sources differ on Claude Dielna's Portland playing time; both readings are noted on his page. He is recorded here as 0 appearances.
• Liam Ridgewell's Portland total is the one materially contested figure. The 97 league appearances shown is the sum of his five per-season totals, but his Wikipedia career table stops after 2015, the 2017 season page and FBref disagree on that season by eight appearances, worldfootball reports 110 and Soccerbase 48. The reasoning is set out in full on his page.
• David Da Costa and Vincent Janssen are active players, so their Portland figures move with each match and different sources are a game or two apart. Both discrepancies are noted on their pages.

Players who appeared in more than one big five division are counted in each.

Data and reuse

The dataset is published as CSV and JSON. The CSV is the source of truth; the site is generated from it, so a correction to one row propagates to the table, the charts and the player page in a single rebuild. 28 documented exclusions are published separately on the near-misses page.
