Dear Elks members,
The UO Quiz Bowl team, consisting of Philip Huang, Sean Cole, Amy Fuller, and Travis Willse, would like to thank your organization, especially Jerry and Mildred Sweet, for contributing to our trip to the national tournament in St. Louis. Without that help, the UO would not have been able to send its first team to a national quiz bowl tournament in eight years.
As for the tournament itself, there were numerous highlights during the tournament. We managed to obtain victories over prestigious teams such as Northeast Regional champion Harvard, and nationally ranked University of Pittsburgh. The UO also managed to nearly knock off Southeast Regional champion Kentucky and Cal Tech before succumbing to them at the bitter end.
The biggest highlight of them all, however, was the performance of 1st year law student Huang, who finished 6th in the individual standings with 53 points per game. Although the others performed well, it was Huang who helped the UO gain the respect of the other schools at the tournament, if not a first-place finish.
The best news, however, is that three of the four members will be returning to the UO next fall, including Huang. This experienced group will help the UO defend its Northwest Regional title next year against the University of Washington Huskies.
Thank you again for contributing to this year's successful Quiz Bowl season and we hope to duplicate this year's success again next year.
Sean Cole
