Etymology
Prophylaxis is borrowed directly from Greek prophylaxis, "guarding or preventing beforehand," the same word used in medicine for preventive treatment administered before disease strikes rather than after. Its adoption into chess is credited specifically to Aron Nimzowitsch, the hypermodern theorist whose classic 1925 book My System elevated prevention of an opponent's plans into a core strategic principle rather than a reactive afterthought — arguing that a strong player does not merely pursue their own ideas but constantly identifies what the opponent wants to achieve and removes that possibility first. The medical metaphor is apt and was likely deliberate: just as a prophylactic medical measure prevents an illness before it can take hold, a prophylactic chess move neutralizes a plan before the opponent can even begin to execute it, often looking, to an untrained eye, like a quiet or even passive move rather than an active threat.
