Botez Gambit
A humorous, internet-era term for accidentally hanging (losing) one's queen for no compensation, especially on a live stream.
The term is named, tongue-in-cheek, after streamer and grandmaster-adjacent personality Alexandra Botez, after clips of her briefly losing her queen went viral in the online chess streaming community.
Etymology
The joke of the Botez Gambit is that it is not a gambit at all: despite the name, the loss of the queen comes with no compensation and is not intentional. The coinage is crowd-sourced and recent: the term was created by viewers of the BotezLive Twitch channel, who dubbed it a “gambit” after WFM Alexandra Botez, the channel's founder, repeatedly blundered her queen across multiple streams. It spread through streaming culture, prominently featured in amateur online tournaments such as PogChamps, and has even been applied to a similar blunder by GM Alexander Zubov in a Titled Tuesday event. No source consulted names an individual coiner or a year; a claim circulating online that Ben Finegold coined the term is unsupported by any fetched source and should not be treated as fact.
First documented: Collectively attributed to viewers of the BotezLive Twitch channel; no specific year or citation confirmed
